PREVENTION

Ideally, there would be no children at risk.  It is the goal of the Prevention Program to provide integrated community-based services that promote emotionally and spiritually healthy children, families, and community.

Central to prevention is the Cowichan values of “children are sacred” and “families are the heart of our people”.  Prevention workers work with clients to develop communication skills, self-confidence, respect of self and others, understanding substance abuse, independent living skills, parenting roles, grief and loss issues, abuse issues and the cycle of violence, family and cultural connections, and role model healthy lifestyles.

Work undertaken by the Prevention team includes:

  • Building supportive one-to-one relationships with children and youth.
  • Ceating positive change in children/youth to reduce at-risk behaviour, especially for those at high risk.
  • Working with Child Safety social workers to identify individual needs and developing goals.
  • Developing and organizing a variety of children/youth groups, incorporating Cowichan values.
  • Facilitating family visits for children in care.
All Prevention Workers have a Diploma in Child & Youth Care.
