LELUM'UY'LH CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTRE

Lelum’uy’lh Child Development Centre offers a wide variety of activities and services to the children of Cowichan Tribes members, ages 0 to 4.  Lelum’uy’lh is unique in two respects:  It is an Infant/Toddler Care, Day Care, Pre-School, and Special Needs service all rolled into one; and incorporates Cowichan teachings into music, art, storytelling, taught in both Hul’qumi’num and English.

Lelum’uy’lh started with eight children, as a joint project between Malaspina University-College and Cowichan Tribes in 1991.  In 1994, Cowichan Tribes took over sole responsibility and participation increased to 35.  In 2004, the Centre provided service for over 140 children.

Lelum’uy’lh Child Development Centre staff all have Early Childhood Education diplomas, some with specialization in infant/toddler and special needs.

Statistics:
500 Cowichan children are under age 5 (2001)
