Land Code at a Glance

Cowichan Tribes has developed a community-driven Land Code in order to replace the land management provisions of the Indian Act.

Under the Framework Agreement, Cowichan Tribes will be able to resume and exercise their own jurisdiction, control and decision making over their lands and resources.

Currently, Indigenous Service Canada (formally INAC) manages Cowichan's land and natural resources on our reserve lands under the Indian Act. We want to change that and resume governance of our lands and natural resources where it belongs, with Cowichan Tribes members.

How Does it Work?

  • Cowichan has developed a Land Code to replace the land management provisions of the Indian Act
  • Cowichan will enter into an Individual Agreement with Canada which essentially describes the transfer of administration from Canada ti Cowichan Tribes
  • Cowichan Tribes will hold a community ratification vote on the Land Code and the Individual Agreement in order to take control of our lands.
