BUSINESS VENTURES
Wal-Mart
We are in the final stages of negotiating a lease with Wal-Mart to build a stand-alone store adjacent to its current location. It currently is a tenant in the Duncan Mall, which is also on Reserve land. This will be one of their first stores on a Reserve in British Columbia.
Gaming Centre
We have an agreement-in-principle with the Duncan Dabbers Bingo Society of Duncan and the BC Lotteries Commission to relocate and expand their gaming facility and design plans are in the works. Public consultation and final approval from the BC Lotteries Commission will follow. The new facility will be located at the corner of the Island Highway and Cowichan Way.
Forestry Agreement
In February 2004 we signed a $13 million Forestry Agreement over a period of six years with the provincial government. With these funds we are able to pursue forestry and other economic development ventures, for much needed jobs and revenue generation.
Terasen Memorandum of Understanding
The start of what was to become a long-standing partnership began in 1990 when Terasen's predecessor, Westcoast Energy signed a job creation agreement with Cowichan Tribes to construct the first natural gas pipeline on Vancouver Island. From this emerged Khowutzun Mustimuhw Contractors (KMC), Khowutzun Development Corporation's flagship company. Today, KMC's pipeline divison installs and distributes mains and
services for Terasen Gass in the Greater Victoria area and
elsewhere.
